Beating the Summer Slide: Why Summer is the Secret Weapon for Dyslexia Therapy Gains
Hey there! Summer can feel like a much-needed break, but for many children with dyslexia, it can also be a time when hard-won reading progress starts to slip.
The Reality of the Summer Slide
For most kids, the “summer slide” means losing a few weeks of math facts. For a child with dyslexia, the stakes are much higher.
- Loss of hard-won progress
- Vanishing confidence
- Increased anxiety about the new school year
- The “re-learning” trap in September

Why Summer is Your “Secret Weapon”
It sounds counterintuitive, right? Adding more work to the summer? But over the years, I’ve seen that summer is actually the most peaceful and productive time for reading intervention for dyslexia.
1. The Brain Isn’t Exhausted
During the school year, your child is spent. They’ve spent seven hours navigating a world not built for them: deciphering instructions, trying to keep up with notes, and feeling the “mental fog” of dyslexia. By the time they get to tutoring at 4:00 PM, their “gas tank” is empty. In the summer? They’ve had a full night’s sleep. They’ve played outside. Their brain is fresh and ready to soak up new information.
2. Focus Without the Friction
In the school year, we are often “triage-ing.” We are trying to help them with tonight’s spelling test while also trying to build their foundational skills. It’s a lot. Summer allows us to put aside the classroom curriculum and focus solely on the individualized dyslexia therapy they need. We can move fast where they are strong and slow down where they are stuck.
3. Intensive Dosing Works
Dyslexia therapy is like physical therapy for the brain. The more consistent the “reps,” the faster the progress. Summer provides a unique window for “intensive” intervention. Instead of one session a week, maybe we do three. This “dosage” can lead to massive jumps in reading level in just a few months.
“But Won’t My Child Hate It?” (Your Questions Answered)
I hear this from parents all the time. You want your child to have a childhood! You don’t want to be the “bad guy.” Let’s look at the questions I get most often:
“Is summer therapy too much for a child who is already frustrated?”
Actually, it’s often less frustrating. Without the pressure of grades and peer comparison, children often find therapy sessions to be a safe haven. We use multisensory tools that make it feel less like “school” and more like a puzzle they are finally learning to solve.
“How do we fit this in with our family vacation?”
This is where online dyslexia therapy is a total game-changer. We have students who log in from lake houses, grandmas’ kitchens, and even hotel rooms at Disney! As long as you have a laptop and Wi-Fi, your online reading tutor is right there with you. It provides a sense of routine without tethering you to a physical office.
“What if we haven’t even started therapy yet?”
It is never too late! If you aren’t sure where to start, our Tests of Dyslexia can provide a diagnostic index to help you understand exactly what your child needs before the next school year begins.

Transforming Struggles into Success Stories
Imagine this: It’s the last week of August. Instead of that familiar pit in your stomach, you feel… excited. Your child isn’t dreading the first day of school because they haven’t spent three months forgetting. They’ve spent three months growing.
They walk into that classroom knowing how to attack a multi-syllable word. They know how to use their “orthographic mapping” to spell tricky words. They have clarity. They have resilience.
Rest assured, the investment you make in June and July pays dividends for the rest of their lives. We aren’t just teaching them to read; we are empowering them to thrive.
